Why Following Jesus Requires Leaving Your Comfort Zone

Comfort is something we all pursue. But what happens when God calls us out of it? There is a real tension between wanting the blessings of following Jesus and being unwilling to endure the discomfort that comes with truly following Him. This is a tension worth examining honestly.

We Willingly Endure Discomfort for Things We Value

Think about the last time you sat in a long line, wore uncomfortable shoes, or paid too much for parking. You did it because whatever was waiting on the other side was worth it. A great meal, a live game, a movie with friends. We push through discomfort all the time for things we enjoy.

So here is the real question: Why are we so willing to endure discomfort for earthly things, but so often unwilling to endure discomfort for the sake of the gospel?

We want the blessing of following Jesus without the cost of following Jesus. But that is not what He calls us to.

What Does Jesus Actually Call Us To?

He Calls Us Out of Comfort

Luke 9:23 makes it plain. "Then he said to them all, 'If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me.'" - Luke 9:23 Christian Standard Bible (CSB)

There is a tension between the desire to change and the comfort of staying the same. When we first encounter Jesus, our hearts begin to shift. We experience His love, His grace, and His salvation in a real way. But following Jesus is more than a single experience. It is a lifestyle change.

Discipleship requires surrender. Picking up your cross requires obedience and dependence on God. And following Jesus means actually going where He leads, not just agreeing with what He taught.

What Does Real Transformation Look Like?

Think of it like getting in shape. A personal trainer can tell you that real results do not come from showing up once or twice a week. They come from changing almost everything about how you eat and how you live. At first, you crave the things you gave up. But over time, those cravings fade because your lifestyle has changed.

The same is true spiritually. If Jesus is genuinely transforming your life, He will eventually transform what you love. And when He transforms what you love, He changes how you live and what you prioritize. You will willingly leave behind the things that once brought comfort but kept you in sin, not because you have to, but because you love Christ and the people He loves.

Where Does Jesus Send Us?

He Sends Us to His People

After His resurrection, Jesus did not wait for people to come to Him. He went to them. He met them where they were. And then He gave His disciples a clear direction.

"Jesus came near and said to them, 'All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.'" - Matthew 28:18-20 Christian Standard Bible (CSB)

Notice what Jesus did not say. He did not say stay here and wait for people to come to you. He said go.

But People Can Be Difficult

Let's be honest. One of the reasons sharing the gospel feels uncomfortable is that people can be hard to love. They can be rude, dismissive, or even cruel. It is easy to look at someone who is frustrating you and feel the last thing you want to do is tell them about Jesus.

But that is exactly who Jesus is sending us to. Not just the people we get along with. Everyone. Because everyone needs to hear that they are loved, that they have purpose, and that there is hope.

"For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. But how can they call on him they have not believed in? And how can they believe without hearing about him? And how can they hear without a preacher? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news." - Romans 10:13-15 Christian Standard Bible (CSB)

Salvation comes through hearing the gospel. So how will anyone hear it if we keep it to ourselves?

You Do Not Have to Go Far

You do not need to travel somewhere exotic to be a missionary. The mission field is already around you. Your family, your friends, your coworkers, your neighbors, your classmates. God has already placed people in your life who need to hear about Jesus. The question is whether you have stopped noticing them.

We make time for the things we decide are important. The issue is not whether you have time. The issue is what you have decided is worth your time.

What Happens When You Actually Go?

Jesus Takes Care of the Details

One of the biggest fears about sharing the gospel is the fear of results. What if they reject me? What if I do not have all the answers? What if nothing happens?

Here is the truth: you are not responsible for results. You are responsible for faithfulness.

"What then is Apollos? What is Paul? They are servants through whom you believed, and each has the role the Lord has given Him. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth." - 1 Corinthians 3:5-7 Christian Standard Bible (CSB)

We plant. We water. God gives the growth. We do not save people. We do not manufacture spiritual transformation. That belongs entirely to God. Our faithfulness is not measured by whether someone says yes. It is measured by whether we said yes to God's direction.

The Gospel Is Meant to Move You

Ephesians 6:15 describes part of the armor of God this way: "and your feet sandaled with readiness for the gospel of peace." - Ephesians 6:15 Christian Standard Bible (CSB)

The gospel is not something we put on and take off depending on how comfortable we feel. It is meant to be on us always, moving us forward, carrying us into the lives of people who need it. His peace goes with us wherever we go. We plant, we water, and God handles the rest.

How Do You Actually Share the Gospel?

We tend to overcomplicate this. Sharing Jesus does not require a long theological conversation or having every answer ready. It starts with something much simpler: your own story.

- Where has Jesus healed you?

- What has He delivered you from?

- When have you experienced His peace?

- Who were you able to forgive after you thought you never could?

Just share what Jesus has done for you. Think of it like that bear who had been rescued as a cub and kept bringing wounded animals back to the place where he knew they could be healed. That is all we are doing. We are bringing broken people to the One who can heal them, not by having all the answers, but by pointing to where healing happened in our own lives.

If you cannot answer those questions, it may be worth asking yourself whether you have allowed Jesus to fully transform your life, or whether you have only been moving from one emotional experience to the next without true surrender.

Life Application

This week, identify one person God has already placed in your life who needs to hear about Jesus. It does not have to be a stranger. It could be a family member, a coworker, or a neighbor you have stopped noticing. Take one step toward them. It might be a conversation, a text, an invitation, or simply praying for them by name each day this week. You do not need all the answers. You just need to be faithful with the step in front of you and trust God with the rest.

Ask yourself these questions as you reflect:

- Am I pursuing the blessings of following Jesus while avoiding the discomfort He calls me into?

- Who has God already placed around me that I have stopped noticing or stopped caring about?

- Can I point to specific moments where Jesus has changed me, and am I willing to share those moments with someone who needs hope?

- Am I measuring my faithfulness by results, or by my willingness to say yes to what God is asking of me?

Following Jesus is not a comfortable life. But it is a meaningful one. And the people around you are worth the discomfort.
